Also, older people who are calling young people “entitled” for simply wanting to be paid during their internships because their time and work is valuable, YOU CAN PROMPTLY FUCK OFF.
You’re encouraging the exploitation of young people and you should be ashamed of yourself.
TL;DR: Employers love to exploit young workers but don’t want to invest in us.
But many people whose families aren’t well off and can’t afford to waste entire summers working for free are then forced to work jobs that do pay— most likely minimum wage — but aren’t relevant at all to the career they want to have.
Why isn’t it time for us to demand more from employers?
I’ve busted my ass in several unpaid internship positions where I’ve *lost* money during my summer. And still, I’m lucky to be able to even do that because my parents are comfortable and can help support me.
Employers are demanding more and more from their applicants — anyone my age who’s just coming out of school can attest to that.
A Bachelor’s degree is no longer good enough for many positions. Employers want a Master’s or a Ph.D or 5 years of prior experience.
Saying that unpaid internships are “a rite of passage” for young people does nothing but stifle meaningful discourse. Are we actually supposed to believe that paying interns a fair wage for their time and labour is somehow making the learning process less valuable?
An unpaid internship is exploitation of labour, pure and simple. Young people need the experience as a stepping stone for paid positions and have no bargaining power at that stage in their career to advocate for more.
To hear a 4 year old say those things, to be forced to be so grownup in that moment in order to comfort her mother.....there are truly no words. https://t.co/vE0QXEoj86
